About Us

Our Story

Founded in 2013 by Suzy and Philip Annetta, Fifth Black is publisher of internationally renowned magazine and media platform Design Anthology, which began as a quarterly journal and has evolved into a global cross-channel design authority. Our knowledge of design, culture, travel, urbanism and architecture is legendary, with the publication covering these areas and more for an influential audience of well-travelled, affluent and savvy professionals, creatives and captains of industry.

This expertise is brought to every client’s project, where our international team of specialists consist of branding strategists, architects, art directors, interior designers, editors, journalists and photographers working in the field every day.

Beginning with best-in-class brand strategy, our team will work with yours to develop a full spectrum of solutions; from evolving or reinventing your brand’s verbal expression through to its visual expression — producing everything from original photography, video and audio to printed works.

Based between our creative studios in Melbourne and Hong Kong, and calling on the support of our commercial and editorial colleagues in London and Singapore, our team brings not just unmatched professional expertise, but also a personal passion, ensuring our work excels strategically while embodying the rigorous understanding of the design industry that our highly discerning audience — and yours — expects.

Our Name

A fifth black is a printer’s term for an extra black colour that’s printed after the normal four-colour process — for example, to adapt books into different languages. It symbolises our roots in print and the way we complete your storytelling process.

Our Wordmark

This is the primary visual representation of our brand. It emphasises our focus on confidence, clarity and attention to detail — facets of our brand evident in all of our work, including our flagship publication Design Anthology.

Our Symbol ¶

Our symbol represents a pilcrow, or paragraph marker. It also evokes an upside-down number 5 and letter B, representing Fifth Black. It emphasises the editorial lens through which we work and the role of storytelling as the central tenet of our brand.
